Me and my 3 mates chasing around the wilds of the UK following the RAC Rally. It took military style planning to make sure we got to the right stage in the right forest at the right time. We'd occasionally hook up with other spectators who had access to keys to some of the forest gates so we could access parts others could not reach!
Many a time we would hit bad weather (it often seemed to coincide with the first snowfall on the moors) or traffic jams trying to get between the stages, which was all part of the fun. As was freezing in a forest, waiting to be blinded by headlights in the night stages. It was all worth it, just to see the great drivers of World Rallying competing in the UK, including the original Stig!
The few times I didn't make it, I would rely on radio reports and then wait for the highlights on BBC2 with William Woollard presenting from Rally HQ and former co-driver Tony Mason out interviewing the drivers and co-drivers as they were called back then!
Great days, great fun, great memories
