Christiaan Fensham: Fernando Alonso

Being an avid fan of Fernando Alonso, 2008 was a hard year for me. After he left McLaren due to being unhappy there, he returned to Renault, where he won his 2 titles in 2005 and 2006. It was, however, not a dream return, and he struggled in car that was mid grid at it's best.

At the Singapore GP of that year, through strategy and his team mate crashing and bringing out a safety car, Fernando Alonso took his first of 2 wins in 2008. After waiting so many races, seeing him struggle to reach the podium with that car, finally, he won a race. The happiness, excitement and pride was massive. My favourite team & driver combination had done it again. It was also memorable for being the first ever night race in F1 history.

Later, it was revealed to be a fixed race, with Alonso's team mate, Piquet, crashing intentionally to bring out the safety car to help Alonso. Despite this, Alonso was unaware of this plan.

He did however win the very next race, the Japanese GP, on own merit, with no fixing needed. A great memory from a difficult year for Alonso fans!
