I did a season of truck racing.
Sometimes I think it is a bit more dangerous in the paddock that it is on the race track, especially if you’re racing against Steve Parrish!
I can remember we were racing at the Nurburgring and he got into my truck before the race.
I went to go down to the assembly area and I hadn’t realised at this point that he had been into my truck.
I went to get in and I slipped, and I thought ‘that’s a bit strange’, there was a bit of grease on the step.
I thought ‘never mind’ and I got in and grabbed the steering wheel and slipped back again.
He had greased the steering wheel he had greased the pedals, he had greased the gear lever, he had put a thin line of grease alongside the wind-screen wipers!
We were being called to the assembly area and my poor mechanic was trying to get all this grease off everywhere and it kept cropping up all over the place.
All through the race I’d touch something else and go “yuck”!
But he was fair on the track.
When you race a truck you feel like a complete hooligan; its brilliant. It has a thousand brake horse power and you could go up to a 100 miles per hour and back down again in nine seconds, and cornering you had chronic understeer going in and chronic oversteer coming out – loads of fun!!!
