Mike Geen: my unconventional finish at Harewood Hill

I work as an instructor at the Hillclimb school and of course still get ribbed about this incident.

The car was new to me and was left-hand drive, so I was trying to get used to the change. My lines weren't great, but there was nothing out of the ordinary on this particular run.

It was however the first time I'd used slick tyres and was running a ridiculously heavy, strong front springs on the front suspension.

I made my way up the hill at a reasonable pace and approached the final right-hand corner, Quarry Bend. I took a bit too much curb and next thing I know the car is up on two wheels. I now know how to stop a car rolling over from this point, by steering with the roll, but at the time I just sat there and waited for the inevitable to happen.

The car went on to its roof. All that went through my mind was just how close the tarmac was to my head!

I did actually cross the line and get a time. And a class win!!

The advice I give to pupils at the start of each school is to ensure they make it up the hill and across the line....even if it is on their roof.....
