Mike Wooldridge and Damian Madden: a selection of memories from the UK and New Zealand

The 60s was a time when we had Ford and Porsche at the top of the game along with Chevron and Lola.

My memory of this time is of Paul Hawkins, David Piper, David Hobbs, Trevor Taylor etc. having great races both in the UK and around the world.

Unfortunately we lost Paul Hawkins when he was competing in the Tourist Trophy at Oulton Park and so we were robbed of finding just how much more he would have achieved in the sport. Mike Woolridge

I'm 40 years old & that's how long I've been going to races. I live in NZ and Pukekohe is my track. My Dad raced mini sevens in the '80s. My Uncle Kevin was Murray Taylor's chief mechanic and was Damon Hill's mechanic when Damon was in F3.

My uncle would come back to NZ for the summer series and work for Graeme Lawrence. Lawrence had Ross Cheever and Davy Jones as drivers one year. Davy was serious and extremely fast, he also won everything. Ross was the class clown and probably had more girlfriends than Davy but not wins....We kids loved Ross. A juice company sponsored the series and we had a never ending supply of juice.

I picked the winner of the '91 Le Mans 24 Hrs after the 2nd hour because I liked the sound of that rotary Mazda. I remember the English fans singing to the Germans: "where did you come this year, where did you come this year". Brilliant. Damian Madden
