In 1986, having led the Championship from Rounds 9 to 15 Mansell, driving a Williams FW11, seemed to be on his way to the world championship title when he suffered a 200mph rear tyre failure in the Australian GP in Adelaide. After returning to Williams from Ferrari he did win the title in 1992, in Hungary, after only 11 of 16 rounds.

Kimi Räikkönen's win in the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix, the final race of the season, also won him the World Drivers' Championship by one point, from Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. During the season he had won six races to their four each.

Racing for Brawn GP - Ross Brawn having led a management takeover of Honda weeks before the 2009 season began - Jenson Button won six of the first seven races and led the Drivers' Championship throughout, winning the title by finishing fifth in 2009's penultimate race, the Brazilian Grand Prix.
