It was one the first meetings of the year in 2012 at PFI international kart circuit.
We were not expecting much as there was a full grid of 32, most of them being super one British championship runners. Adding to the big entry and top drivers entered, it was also my first time at the track.
I spent most of Saturday practice learning the track, with a lot of help from former European race winner David Sutton who helped with the lines but also telling me how to get the best out of the kart.
After being off the pace of the front runners in the morning, when afternoon came we started to find some good pace. Then race day came.
New track, the biggest entry I have ever raced in and drivers that had been karting a lot longer than me. As a team we were just looking for a mid-field finish 20th - 15th around there.
Then the first heat came. I started along way back in 24th on the random grid slots for heats.
After getting through the first lap still intact we were in luck. Then the kart just started to get quicker and quicker. There was some traffic to work through but I managed to get up to 14th. A great first heat.
After that strong first heat the plan was to just keep out of trouble and get another good finish.
We started 8th on the grid for heat two. After a bit of rough and tumble at the start we got through and had another very strong finish of 8th. After two good heats we qualified 12th on the grid for the final.
If you had told me and my dad that the week before we would have qualified p12 we would have most likely laughed.
The final was like heat two we finished 12th but had to work hard going forward at the start after getting knocked back but we then had to try and just push in the middle of the race and took back some more positions.
This for me was one of the stand out weekends of all the time I have been karting just for the pace we showed and matched the pace of such good drivers around us not to mention it was the first time at the track.
