Since MotoGP replaced the 500cc class in 2002 Valentino Rossi has won seven titles, in 2002 and 2003 with Honda, and in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009 with Yamaha. Rossi came into MotoGP as the 2001 500cc World Champion.

Casey Stoner won the 2011 MotoGP Championship riding a Honda, with Jorge Lorenzo, riding for Yamaha, finishing second despite not participating in the final three Grands Prix. In the course of the same season James Toseland announced his immediate retirement due to injury.
