Mark Lowe: The Metro 6R4 at The Jersey Rally

As a fan of the Channel Island based Jersey Rally and an event it was good to witness first hand a 6R4 competing on the rally back in 2007 which was my second year over there, the first being in October 2006.

This was Adrian Smekkes / Eric West. in their 2.5 Metro 6R4.

The second time I saw a 6R4 compete there was in 2009 when Staffordshire based baker Mark Jasper and Ireland based Geordie Don Whyatt first came over to compete, these two have become good friends of mine. They were up to second on the rally when they broke the differential.

The sight and sound of a Metro 6R4 along the tight Jersey lanes more usually used for green lanes where the speed limit is 15mph is something else. The crew vowed to return and it wasn't until 2011 that they came back and where fighting for a top 3 position when they suffered a high speed 120mph accident pitching the car onto its side before tipping up and going end over end and game over. they have confirmed they will be back in 2012 as its unfinished business for them.

Another crew to venture to the island in 2011 was Metro 6R4 debutant Simon Chapman and his Irish journalist co driver Sean Moriarty. Simon had bought the 6R4 earlier in the year and brought it to Jersey where he was setting top 3 stage times to finish an excellent 6th overall. Simon loved the event so much he has also confirmed to be back on the island this coming October.

My love for Metro 6R4's goes way back though when I first saw them on the Lombard RAC coverage in 85 and 86.
