Antony Taylor: career memories

My father sparked my interest in motor racing, he had one or two nice cars. I built my first car, signed up for the 750 motor club and went racing. You drove the car to the circuit, raced, packed up and drove it home again. It was fantastic!

My first ever race was at Linton-on-Ouse Airfield in Yorkshire. I broke down half a mile from the circuit and someone from near where I lived flashed past in a Healey Silverstone, spotted me parked up, stopped and came back to tow me in. I went and bought a new coil and off I went! I also raced at Rufforth, both of which were RAF airfields. The RAF brought some of the arnco over from Aintree and would put it up on the runway. Racing at Rufforth continued for sometime but now it's just wheat fields! I went on to win a couple of sprint and hill-climb championships in a Lotus 69, a Lotus Elite and later a Formula 2 car

I used to race a Lister Bristol and then moved on to a MkII Jaguar before moving up to big bangers. I won a championship in a 5 litre Can-Am car and two years later competed in the Red Rose historic championship in a BRM. I've always tried to find a nice big V8. I'm racing a McLaren M6 today, it's the first time I've driven the circuit since it was last changed, it is slower than it used to be, there are so many more wiggles and corners.

I've been coming here for over 50 years, the track was always good and the facilities were never bad, but obviously far more basic than they are now
