Paul Cheung: the Sound of Formula One

Addicted to the sound of F1

Working with the Red Bull team is quite addictive. I remember in 2007 standing next to David Coulthard’s car in the pit garage thinking how the previous year I was just like any other F1 fan, sat watching on the settee with my son Bruno. Now here I was, not only at a race, but working for a team.

The first time I heard the car start up is a memory that lives with me forever. They start the car with what looks simply like a long black and decker drill. From the metallic whirring of the drill the engine sparks into life and suddenly there is the most phenomenal sound that almost overwhelms you completely.

As DC pulled away, with the revs of the engine heading towards 18,000 RPM, the sound just goes right through your body. What I quickly learned was if you stand on the pit wall and have your mouth open even a tiny amount when they go past at maximum revs, the noise is so extreme that it goes into your mouth and reverberates all around your head.

I find after the season finishes, during the winter break I really miss hearing the sounds of F1 and always end up watching old races just to get my fix of the noise of an F1 engine.
